The Weight of a Bad Leader: When Insecurity Drives Leadership

How many of you have had a bad leader?  I hate to admit it, but I’ve come across plenty of people in leadership positions who never should have been there. Some would have been better off staying as analysts or subject matter experts roles where their skills truly shine. But leadership?  That was never their strength........................ Sure, everyone deserves the chance to grow, but let’s be honest some people simply aren’t meant to lead and that is ok. My thoughts on this!!!! Leadership is often described as a guiding light. Someone who uplifts, inspires, and supports growth in those around them. But what happens when a leader does the opposite? When their leadership is fueled not by vision or integrity, but by insecurity and self-preservation? Many of us have experienced a bad leader the one who steps on the shoulders of others just to be seen, who takes credit for ideas that aren’t theirs, and who seems more threatened by your skills than appreciative of them. A leader...

Let’s talk DEI….

Let’s Talk About DEI in 2025: From A Black Canadian Perspective. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is at a crossroads in 2025. Across North America, we’re seeing both progress and pushback; hope and hostility. As a Black Canadian man, I’ve experienced firsthand what it means to fight for a seat at the table, to be judged by the tone of my skin before my skills, and to navigate a world that still doesn’t always see my full potential. While Canada has its own racial challenges, what’s happening in the U.S. right now is absolutely unthinkable. Affirmative action is being rolled back, DEI initiatives are under attack, and states are actively working to erase conversations about race from education, workplaces and culture. Corporations that once championed DEI are now quietly stepping away, afraid of political and legal repercussions. This isn’t just a U.S. problem; it affects all of us. When a country as influential as the U.S. starts reversing progress, it gives permission for others to do...

February 23: Reflection on My Life Journey

Today, I turn another year older. Birthdays have a way of making you pause; forcing you to reflect on where you’ve been, what you’ve endured, and where you’re headed. If you asked me years ago what my life would look like by now, I would have painted a picture of stability, success, and certainty. But life doesn’t work that way. Life is unpredictable, relentless, and at times, cruel. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that failure and rejection are constant companions on the road to growth. I have lost count of the number of times I have been turned away from; like opportunities denied, doors shut in my face and people who didn’t believe in what I could offer. I’ve poured my heart into work and relationships only to watch them fall apart. And yet, somehow, I’ve kept moving. Not because I’m fearless, but because I’ve learned that failure is not final. Life has been a cycle of building and rebuilding. I’ve experienced the depths of heartbreak, the joys and struggles of marriage, the...

Leadership Reflections

Reflections on My Journey as a Leader: Leadership is a journey, not a destination. Over the years, I’ve realized that being a leader isn’t just about managing people or making decisions; it’s about growth, adaptability, and the ability to inspire those around you. It’s about learning, unlearning, and embracing the challenges that shape us into better leaders and, ultimately, better people. Early in my career, I thought leadership was about having the right answers. I believed that my value as a leader depended on how much knowledge I had and how quickly I could provide solutions. But experience has taught me that true leadership is not about answering all the questions; it’s about asking the right ones. It’s about listening deeply, empowering others to step up, and allowing space for both success and failure. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t great at stepping aside at first. I was an influx leader, always jumping in to solve problems instead of giving others the chance to navigate their own ch...

Introducing Myself

Welcome to Life Of Man Canada Hello, and welcome to Life Of Man Canada! My name is Lorn, and I’m excited to share my journey with you; one that weaves together my passions for leadership, photography, and mental well-being. With over 18 years of experience in operations management and leadership, I’ve learned that true leadership isn’t just about strategy and decision-making; it’s about inspiring others, resilience, and continuously growing. Both professionally and personally. Through this blog, I aim to explore what it means to lead with purpose and create meaningful impact. Beyond leadership, I find my greatest sense of peace behind the lens and camera. Photography allows me to capture the world’s raw beauty; whether it’s the serenity of the wilderness, the intricacies of architecture, or the untamed spirit of wildlife. It’s my way of telling stories that words sometimes fail to express. But perhaps the most important journey of all is the one within. Mental well-being and health are...
